This story was written by Peggy, the foster mom for Mimi, now known as Bella.
"Mimi was 2 years old & a very pathetic, scared and skinny girl with a dull scraggly coat when she came to me. However, all I cared about was that she was a Border Collie, (my favorite breed), and that she needed help in finding a second chance at a loving furever home. She needed someone who could see her inner beauty while the outside got the love and care it needed to blossom and shine! And shine she did...after about 3 months, she had gained proper weight & her long coat was silky & shiny!! She looked like a completely different dog! She was beautiful, well socialized and a real sweetheart. I was so proud of what she had become and proud of myself that I could help her become the dog she was meant to be!! I knew then that I wanted to continue doing what I could for these deserving dogs."
"While having lunch outside a local cafe, with Mimi in tow, a couple inquired about her after overhearing me talking to my husband about fostering her. Mimi, now Bella, is almost 10 years old & has been living a great life, with that very couple, in Penn Valley, Ca. I have seen her afterwards & for a dog that didn’t even know how to play with toys or other dogs when she came into our foster home, Mimi (Bella) eventually played great with all dogs & when adopted she loved to play with her border collie brother, Rowdy! She also loved to cuddle with her now Mom & Dad on the bed on Sunday mornings while enjoying belly rubs where she got the nickname “Belly Bean”!
Miracles DO happen, Mimi and we are so proud of the almost 10 years you have lived, played & loved with Kelly & Todd Pierce & your newest border collie brother, Ollie, in Penn Valley, California. I, am so happy that it was love at first sight for Kelly & Todd and that they could invision the beautiful dog you were always meant to be!! I shed tears because it was so hard to say good-bye to this sweet girl, after only 3 months, but knowing that you were going to the right home & the right people….they were definitely tears of joy!!
Anyway, this poem reminded me of Mimi and that ALL of these "throw away' dogs are beautiful and worth all the effort that ALL we foster parents put in to rescuing, caring for, rehabilitating, socializing, vetting & finding new homes for. and finding them their own second chance at a loving and happy life...."2nd hand dogs make the best pets" (in my humble opinion)!!"
Rescue Dog Poem
A rescue dog will have a tale to tell
It may be sad, or of a life of Hell
It may be a story of a once loved pup
Who found herself homeless when a marriage broke up
Or a faithful companion, who's owner's passed on
And the poor little dog doesn't know where they've gone.
Or of a dog that’s been beaten, never had the chance to ‘live’
And yet gain his trust - he’ll have so much love to give.
A pup that grew out of the cute, cuddly stage,
Has grown big and unruly and is now at ‘that age’
So he gets given away, it’s such a shame
When it’s the lack of training that’s really to blame.
Some rescue dogs may be quite old
Just need a nice home, out of the cold
A warm cozy bed, for weary old bones
No dog should spend it’s last days on it’s own.
Rescue dogs can be misunderstood
Often seen as damaged goods
But a ‘pre-owned’ dog has much to offer
And compared to a pup, can be far less bother
A rescue dog may not know how to play
But a little bit of kindness should show them the way.
Some rescue dogs will have great credentials,
Others show promise and heaps of potential.
Some need guidance, to learn how to trust
For others, some training will be a must
But what you put in, you’ll get back tenfold
A loyal friend, with a heart of gold
He may be pure, cross or mixed breed
But one things for sure-he’ll be in need
Of a loving home, a new 'mum' or 'dad'
Surely with this, he'll stop being so sad.
A rescue dog is a breed apart
Please find space for one in your heart
