Jack is a 3 year old neutered male. He is 21" from his shoulders to the ground and weighs 62 pounds.
Jack is an affectionate, playful, and sociable yet pretty mellow border collie mix (maybe lab and Australian shepherd, but that’s just a guess). Not shy with strangers at all; he easily makes friends (both human and dog), loves to be close to you, and has a lot of love to give. He is smart and quite attuned to your tone of voice. He loves to snuggle and will lay in your lap. Jack is quite well-behaved in public and is the kind of dog you could take almost anywhere - he rides well in the car and loves to explore different places (from urban to rural) with his people. He is able to be calm and settle very well in public. Jack has spent up to 5 hours at my dog-friendly office - after some initial excitement, he’ll nap under my desk, enjoy a chew, or just watch people. A friend of mine also took him to a 4-hour coffee shop outing in San Francisco, and she reported that he did great, easily charmed people who walked by, and was even tolerant of young kids. Jack has also done well off-leash playing fetch at a school field, and has fairly good recall, especially if you have treats.
* Housetrained
* NOT crate trained but has not been destructive when left alone
* Athletic and enjoys long walks/hikes, but is not a dog who “needs a job”
LIKES:
* He LOVES to meet new people and to receive attention and affection from you. He is eager to get belly rubs and butt scratches, even from strangers. However, he does not seem to require constant interaction. If you work from home, he’ll happily curl up on the couch and nap (or watch you).
* All kinds of food and treats. He is VERY food motivated and uses a puzzle bowl to slow his eating. Not a picky eater at all.
* Walks & hikes. Overall he is very good on leash and pulls minimally with a front clip harness. He does mark very often on walks.
* Playing with other dogs. His previous owner took him to dog parks and he enjoyed playing chase with other dogs. He shows good social skills - he play bows to initiate and will take cues from other dogs.
* Playing with toys. He enjoys playing fetch with balls and will sometimes bring it back near you. He is not ball-obsessed and won’t “play till he drops.” Jack will frequently take breaks to chew on the ball, and his limit seems to be about 20 minutes of fetch. He also likes to play tug, keep away, and chew on squeaky plush toys and his spiky rubber ball.
DISLIKES:
Overall, he’s pretty easy going and adaptable. However Jack is pretty sensitive, like most BC’s. He is sensitive to some noises (fireworks, gunshots, even in the distance especially at night) - where he’s responded by barking but is able to redirect. He is fine with the blender and OK with a vacuum. He does not seem like an anxious dog, but at times can become hyper vigilant and skittish in some surroundings. I’ve seen this most when taking him to stores like Pet Food Express. During his most recent trip to get vaccines at a Pet Club, he initially kept pulling towards the door but eventually settled in the line. Jack also doesn’t seem to enjoy his front paws being held and will mouth your hand or pull it away from you. He is not a fan of baths but tolerated us giving him one recently (although he did try to escape a few times).
TRAINING STATUS:
Jack has never attended any formal training classes, but has a good base. When he came to us, he only knew “sit.” In a few weeks, he has learned “shake,” “down” (lay down), and is working on refining “stay,” “off,” “leave it,” “come,” and checking in during his walks.
I think his biggest areas to work on are:
* Calmly greeting people: He tends to put his front paws on people and can jump towards their face. He can become mouthy when excited or in a playful mood. A few times he’s bopped me on the nose with his mouth out of excitement. For this reason, I recommend he go to a home with older (8+) children.
* Counter surfing: He is curious and will need proactive management to keep him from putting his front paws on counters. He’s been sneaky about very quickly stealing food off our kitchen island a few times (even when we’re in the same room!).
* Not begging for food: He can be pushy about begging for human food, especially if you eat on the couch. Since we live in a 430 SF ADU and eat all our meals on the couch, this might not be a problem in a larger home.
* Barking at new people entering “his space:” While he is quite friendly with people, I think he can get overstimulated and act protective (mainly lots of barking) of what he deems his space. I’ve seen this when our neighbor drops off packages and when we had a couple visitors enter our home.
Jack would likely thrive in a variety of homes, as long as he is included, feels loved and secure, and gets his basic needs met. His exercise needs are moderate - he’s not a dog that NEEDS to run every day; he seems happy with two ~30 minute walks per day. He has done well in both urban and suburban settings. He might be OK in an apartment/condo since he hasn’t been destructive living in our small 1BR/1BA ADU, but he can be sound-sensitive and will counter surf if not monitored carefully. I think he’d enjoy living with a dog friend, but it’s not a requirement. He might be OK living with cats since he did live with one at his previous home, but I’ve seen him try to chase cats/squirrels/deer while on walks (some prey drive). He is unaffected by birds.
While we’ve known Jack for only less than a month as his foster family, we will definitely miss him. He came to us via a rehoming situation because his previous family was moving internationally and could not bring him. Jack will come with all his toys, harness & leash, food/water bowls, blankets, grooming supplies, and 5 months of Simparica Trio.
Asking for a reasonable rehoming fee, which mostly helps cover getting him UTD with vaccines, heart worm disease test, and preventative meds.
Jack is living in Castro Valley.
